8-8-8 Balance Audit

Log a typical week. We'll convert it to a per-day average and score how close you are to the 8-8-8 ideal across work, life, and sleep — and tell you which pillar needs the most attention.

Estimate your weekly hours in each category. Be honest, not aspirational. We'll convert to a per-day average and score the balance.

Work pillar — contribution (hours/week)
Yes, parenting is work. So is caring for a parent, teaching free, building open source.
Life pillar — receiving (hours/week)
Passive consumption counts here, not work-related screen time.
Sleep pillar — restoration (hours/week)
7×7 = 49 hours/week. Be honest — actual sleep, not time in bed scrolling.

How the score works

We sum the absolute deviation from 8 hours/day across all three pillars, divide by 24 (the maximum possible), and subtract from 100. A perfect 8-8-8 day scores 100. Sleep 4, work 14, life 6 scores 25.

The score is a heuristic, not a verdict. Life stages shift the ideal — a new parent's "work" pillar is huge by design; a retiree's might be small. Use it as a mirror, not a rule.

A note on the philosophy

Work is contribution to others — paid or unpaid. Life is receiving from others — paid or unpaid. Sleep is restoration. The triangle holds when each side is honoured.
